History

Porter was built and opened for Kinder through Sixth Grade in the fall of 1991.

The name William S. Porter was chosen in honor of the many accomplishments of William S. Porter.  William was very active in the political arena.  In 1950, Arizona Governor Howard Pyle appointed Mr. Porter to the State Board of Real Estate.  In 1953, The Board of Supervisors appointed him to the State Legislature, where he served 12 years in the House of Representatives and four years in the State Senate.  From 1969-1970, Mr. Porter served as President of the State Senate.  Mr. Porter attended the Republican Convention in Chicago and was a delegate when President Eisenhower was nominated President of the United States.

Mr. Porter always supported the community in his work and church activities.  Many people remember him as one of the most powerful and influential men in Arizona.   

During the 2001-2002 school year a mural was painted inside the school's front entrance in celebration of Porter's 10th anniversary. The mural was painted by one of Porter's parents and local artist Karen McCumby.  Stop by and see this beautiful panoramic mural that tells the life story of William S. In celebration of our 20th anniversary a second mural was painted inside the school office in 2011.  The leaves on the beautiful tree shading the Lions is made up of hand prints from past and present Porter staff and some of our community leaders.  The grass below was made from hand prints from all our kindergarteners and 2 students from each class in the 2011-2012 school year. 

In May of 2015, Porter received the A+ School of Excellence designation.  This is a 3 year recognition.  
The A+ School of Excellence™ Program was created by the Arizona Educational Foundation in 1983. Its purpose is threefold:

  • to identify and give public recognition to outstanding public schools in Arizona;

  • to make available a comprehensive framework of key criteria for school effectiveness that can serve as a basis for participatory self-assessment and planning in schools;

  • to facilitate communication and sharing of best practices within and among schools based on a common criteria related to success.
